The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adichie

Think of a time you have either read or heard someone make a stereotype about another person or group or people, whether it be in the media or in our own personal lives. Although it is not something we may necessarily be proud to admit, I think it is safe to say that many, if not all of us can think of at least one and have maybe even gone to believe it. In the article â€Å"The Danger of a Single Story† by Chimamanda Adichie, she explains that untrue and incomplete stereotypes are formed when hear only one side of a story. Adichie further supports her idea that single stories create untrue and incomplete stereotypes by providing us with multiple examples and experiences from her own life. She begins her article talking about her first†¦show more content†¦immediately after, she became overwhelmed with shame for realizing she had developed a single story about them, just as people had done of her. Adichie felt it was due to the way Mexicans were portrayed in the media that had led them to become one thing and one thing only, the abject of an immigrant. Throughout the article Adichie provides us with several examples supporting her idea that single stories are dangerous. One of her most significant claims is when she talks about Fide. Whenever Adichie would not finish her dinner her mother would tell her â€Å"Finish your food! Don’t you know? People like Fide’s family have nothing† (1). Due to her mother constantly reminding her of how poor Fide and his family were, she developed a single story about them. This single story being that they were poor, and that was all they were. However, this changed when one weekend Adichie and her mother visited Fide’s village. When Fide’s mother showed them a beautifully patterned basket that they had made, Adichie was shocked. She was shocked because all she had heard of was their poverty and had no idea they were capable of creating things. Their poverty was the her single story of them. Next, Adichie tells us about her experience of when she left Nigeria to go to University in the United States. Here is where she soon found herself becoming Fide’s single story in the eyes of her American roommate. Vitamin Water Revealed as Non-Healthy Beverage by Coca-Colas

Question: Discuss about the Essay for Vitamin Water Revealed as Non-Healthy Beverage by Coca-Colas. Answer: 1). According to the video, Coca Cola advertises that Vitamin Water will give people protection similar to exercise or flu shots. Discuss whether this is deceptive advertising or mere promotion. Answer: Vitamin water is a misnomer as accurately this should be labeled as sugar water, This is because, the two main ingredients of this are water and sugar (which is linked to host of health issues). Besides these, Vitamin water has dose of synthetic vitamin chemicals which are not advisable and any informed customer would like to refrain from consuming these. Hence, the vitamins in this water are artificial and nowhere close to natural vitamins in terms of utility (Adams, 2010). As a result, I am of the firm opinion that the company resorts to deceptive advertisement to cash on the customers ignorance. In the name of a healthy vitamin drink, the company in actuality is providing the customers with sugar water which in the long term would lead to health issues such as obesity and diabetes. Through the prudent use of deceptive advertisement, the company is able to associate the consumption of this product with happiness and health but in actuality sustained consumption is associated with suffering (Schultz, 2005). Also, equating these drinks with exercise or flu shots is preposterous since this claim has no backing of any independent and reputed health agency. Clearly, this is nowhere close to the reality and in actuality consumption of plain water is considered to be healthier than vitamin water (Adams, 2010). 2). Vitamin Water responds to the claim by stating that the ingredients are clearly on the label. Discuss whether manufacturers have any duty to warn the public about their products or whether the law should adopt the idea of buyer beware so that consumers read the labels. Answer: In USA, the product liability litigation has made rapid strides and thereby augers well for consumer protection. The law is currently in the favor of the buyer as the liability of defects lies on the manufacturer. However, the manufacturers cry soul over this shift as they argue that this has led to higher litigation costs which have escalated the overall product costs. They have asked for alterations in the law to limit this liability to reasonable levels (Grubb and Howells,2000) The liability of the manufacturer should be limited to only those cases when there is negligence on part of the manufacturer which potentially causes harm to the consumers. Further, the seller also provides certain product warranties which it is legally obliged to fulfill. Additionally, during sales promotion and advertising false claims may be made about the produce and the potential health hazards may be hidden. Any misrepresentation by the seller should be punishable provided the plaintiff can prove that purchase decision was taken on that basis (Kurer et. al., 2002). .The manufacturer on their part should not be negligent and should disclose all ingredients and their nutritional value without using any deceptive advertisement. The government on their part need to educate the consumers with regards to healthy choices of products and the consumers should inculcate these in their buying behavior (Schultz, 2005).. 3). Near the end of the video clip, the health and medical editor states that washing hands and drinking water will keep one healthier than most of the health products on the market. Should Congress or the states be more assertive about regulating products based on health issues or is that too much like big brother watching? Answer: Yes, it is expected that more regulation of products need to be done considering the implications of wrong choices. The government standards and policies need to be suitably amended so as to enhance the regulation of various manufacturers of edible products (Schultz, 2005).. In this regards, the incidence of deceptive advertisement without any independent claims need to be curbed. The advertisement particularly needs regulation so that unverified claims cannot be made at the expense of public health (Kurer et. al., 2002). The assertion by the health and medical editor is true and it is imperative that the consumer should not fall in the trap of fake marketing gimmicks built by these corporations. More research should be done on these products by the consumer using internet and product queries can also be raised so as to know if the claim is backed by any independent agency of repute. The Eclogues free essay sample

While, Titters has goats he can hardly lead [E. I . 1 3] and is losing his land, Titters invited Melodious to enjoy his abundance of milk cheese with him, to experience his mealy chestnuts. Despite being told of all the dreadful places that Titters will have to relocate to, thirsty Africa, Britannic quite cut off from he whole world, and his poor cabins turf-heaped roof, Titters asserts himself and his prosperity, inviting Melodious to see all that he is missing. Also, in this passage, the second reference to shade and shadows is made.Of course, high mountains will cause taller shadows, however shadows often have a otherworldly meaning to them in Roman literature. Theres a sense of spirits and ghosts that goes along with the word, providing for an eerie end to the first Eclogue. A similar line is said in the third book of Horses odes, as the sun moved around the mountain shadows. We will write a custom essay sample on The Eclogues or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page . . [H. 3. 6. 41] This poem, Horses 3rd ode and 6th poem, is his most depressing and, not surprisingly most similar to Horses first eclogue. They both deal with the dismal aftermath of the Punic wars. However, Horses poetry focuses on the progeny of the warriors in Romeos civil war. He pays attention mostly to the decay of the morality and sense of duty in the generations after the war. This poem opens with a warning to the current Roman, you will pay for the sins four fathers until you restore the crumbling temples and shrines of the gods and their smoke-blackened images. But this is immediately followed by a reasoning behind this warning, making it seem as if this isnt arbitrary. It is said that because their neglect of the gods has brought many ills to the sorrowing lands of Hesperus. Similarly, as Titters was dealing with relationship problems, so are the Romans of Horses poetry. He has attributed the disaster that has flowed over our whole land and its people CHI. 3. 6. 19] to its corrupted marriage, family, and home. [H. 3. 6. 1 8] The Roman people have lost their sense of family and home, most probably because of the land confiscations. Home and property are a major symbol of belonging and stability for the Romans. With that lost, what is left to hold on to? The generations after the wars have lost their way and their direction. The women no longer have a a moral compass to guide them. A wife is easily persuaded to indulge in illicit pleasures: listening to any calls for her from a Spanish sea captain that will pay for a good price for her shame. [H. 3. 6. 32] After, Horace adds a couple more lines describing the steep decline of the generations after the Punic wars. Saying things like how these cannot be the hillier of men Voodoo stained the sea with Punic blood. [H. . 6. 33] The men who fought in the civil wars were the manly sons of farmer soldiers The men who fought in the wars were the sons of a strict mother. Here, note the singular use of mother. Horace is not describing mother as the maternal figure in a familial setting, which would make sense in this poem due to its ancestral descriptions. But, here, mother is used to describe Rome. These were the children of a strict mother, that lived in a household that was well put together and orderly. The placement of mother and sun so lose to each other is ironic.Even though this irony can only be found through an English translation, it is evocative of lyrics written by The Smiths. In the song How Soon Is Now? , they play with the words son and heir, which, go without saying sound like the elements sun and air. Just like in Horses third ode, he plays with mother and sun and the idea of progeny in terms of a greater scale: the generations to come and their mother, Rome. But, as the sun moved round the mountain shadows, [H. 3. 6. 41] things began to change. Here, the second reference to shadows and shade is made.Just as in Virgins first eclogue when Titters takes refuge in the cool shade, the weary oxen take this time to loose themselves from the yoke. As they are being let go of their duties on their yoke, a chariot brought on the hour they longed for. [H . 3. 6. 44] Concluding this poem is a pessimistic message regarding the present, as well as future generations: Our parents were not the men their fathers were, and they bore children worse than themselves, whose children will be baser still. [H. 3. 6. 45] The final line is not hopeful in the slightest way for a better enervation. It says that it is expected that the people of Rome will only get worse with time. However, saying something like that could be just the motivation that someone needs to better themselves. Comparing these two passages, one will notice the similarities in pastoral imagery and the references to shade and shadow. In addition, it can also be noted that these both have very dark and pessimistic tones to them. Having both been written after the Punic wars and the rise of Augustus, these poems show the displacement of familial values and the daily struggles of the people f Rome after Julius Caesar.Titters has lost his land and has to resort to leaving the country. Girls of the land cannot learn traditional Ionian dance steps because they have been lost to obscene lusts and wives have been lost to Spanish sea captain calls. Horace and Virgil, through Odes and Eclogues, respectively, have shown the downfall of Roman culture after the ascent of Augustus Caesar. Their statuses as respected poets amongst the people of Rome allow them a position of influence to restore the society to what it once was, perjuries.
